Pain, suffering and illness are asking for care, – not opinions

When I am connected with loving awareness, it is easier for me to eat healthy, exercise, create, connect and communicate with others in healthier ways.

Nobody likes to have ill health. We all want to be healthy and happy. But it is a part of the human experience to have ill health. So the question is; how do we relate to it? How do we respond to it?

I can honestly say (having lived with ill health for many years), that I used to hate it. Fortunately I learned to change my relationship with it. It doesn’t mean that I loved it. But I learned to accept it.

The energy of acceptance created a space where I could rest. With a calmer mind and relaxed body I also learned to do small, wise adjustments and changes that helped my health improve. Day by day I noticed small changes.

I walked slower and wasted less energy. I was more patient, kinder to myself and others. I was more creative, more joyful. I could go on. The most important thing is that I learned to love who I am.

I know I am not my ill health. The loving relationship we have to ourselves opens us to possibilities. Possibilities to experience life as whole beings.

Another beautiful experience I have after practicing mindfulness and self-compassion for years is that it doesn’t feel like a practice. It feels more like a new way of being with myself and life.

It has made a change in me that didn’t come from the outside (like many changes unfortunately) do. The change comes from the inside. This is why the words from our beloved teacher Thich Nhat Hanh resonates so deeply with me:

The way out, is in.

When I am connected with loving awareness, it is easier for me to eat healthy, exercise, create, connect and communicate with others in healthier ways, instead of causing harm or adding more suffering.

May we all awaken to who we are and find a way to be with ourselves and life with love and compassion.
